COncierge Medicine: A patient and provider partnership

Ms.Medicine practices are membership-based and charge an annual patient fee instead of opting into insurance and Medicare plans. This practice structure allows you to have longer patient appointments, enhanced access, telehealth appointments when appropriate, direct email and cell phone access to me, and improved healthcare navigation services. This approach was structured to add value to your health, well-being and quality of life.
We believe patients need and should expect:
    • Up-to-date, evidence-based care
    • Exceptional customer service
    • Easy access to the practice
    • More time with your provider
    • Direct access to your provider
    • Enhanced provider/patient relationship
    • Healthcare navigation services
    • Lower cost, affordable healthcare
In addition, my patients receive:
    • A full, 60-minute annual exam, plus routine annual visit lab work
    • Up to 30-minute, problem-focused or follow-up exams as needed throughout the year
    • A 60-minute functional fitness examination with our Physical Therapist
    • A 60-minute nutrition consultation with our Nutritionist
    • Vision and hearing screening
    • Annual EKG (if prescribed)

Adults over 26 years of age – $2750 (spouse/partner rate $2,500 to second member)

Young adults (17 – 26 years of age) – $1000 or $500 if one parent is a member of the practice.

Patients should continue to hold healthcare insurance as it can be used to cover services outside of your primary care office visits, such as visits with specialists or hospitalization, but your primary care visits are included in your membership. Some HSAs allow membership fees to be submitted for reimbursement; check with your third-party administrator.

The Ms.Medicine model also may reduce your overall healthcare costs. By working to keep you healthy and out of the hospital, we’re able to decrease your need for emergency and urgent care visits. Additionally, we are working to be able to pass on additional cost savings through greatly reduced fees for specialty lab testing, diagnostic testing and other services.

(Although the Ms.Medicine model was created to address the complex medical needs of women, I also see men patients in my practice because I value health of families.)

Gender-specific care

Much progress has been made to make better healthcare for women. For example, a 1993 act mandated inclusion of women and minorities in clinical trials funded by the NIH. But more than 25 years later, women’s healthcare is still inadequate.

That’s why we look deeper into the fundamental health differences between men and women and bring individualized care to those we serve.

Just a few health differences between men and women:

  • Stroke: About 55,000 more women than men have a stroke each year. However, the signs of a stroke in women (weakness, fever, changed mental status) present differently than “classic” symptoms, often leading to misdiagnosis. Women who survive a stroke have a worse quality of life than their male counterparts.
  • Heart disease: Overall prevalence and risk factors affect women differently than men, and the signs of heart attack in women also present differently. Women are more than 50% more likely than men to die in the first year after a heart attack.
  • Cancer: About one in five people diagnosed with lung cancer never smoked, but among them, women are three times more likely than men to get diagnosed.
  • Osteoporosis:  There are multiple reasons why women are more likely to get osteoporosis than men. Women tend to have smaller, thinner bones than men. Estrogen, a hormone in women that protects bones, decreases sharply when women reach menopause, which can cause bone loss.  Autoimmune diseases can be a risk factor for osteoporosis.
  • Pelvic floor disorders:  Childbirth, aging, and menopause create unique pelvic floor issues for women such as urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, bladder prolapse (cystocele), prolapse of the rectum through the vagina (rectocele), prolapse of the uterus, and painful intercourse to name a few.  These conditions are embarrassing to women and on average it takes 3-7 years for women to seek attention for these issues.  A primary care physician can diagnose and make appropriate referral to a specialist.

What patients are saying about Dr. West

I have been looking for a new PCP for years now and Dr. West was a breath of fresh air. She spent over an hour listening to me and figuring out a solution. I would definitely recommend her to friends and family!

Best interaction I’ve ever had with a medical professional. She took time and she cared and wanted to get to know me.

My appointment with Dr. West was easily on of the best medical experiences I have had. She was extremely courteous, knowledgeable, and really took her time to get to know me and my unique situation. I would gladly recommend her to anyone.

Dr. West remembers me and actively listens to what I have to say. She is informed, intelligent and one of the best doctors I’ve ever had.

Dr. West is excellent! She spent a lot of time with me, really listened to my concerns and answered all my questions. I liked that she was not rushed and that she took the time to get to know me since I am new patient to her.

Dr. West is simply excellent. She takes the time to understand any concerns and put them within the holistic picture of my health. I have already recommended her to friends and colleagues, who have in turn, been so pleased that they have recommended her as well.
